2026—He Has A Name

My little Anna’s Hummingbird has a name! I realized that I have to call him Spike. His head is covered with spiky looking pin feathers surrounding his eyes and under his beak. When they emerge, they are itchy and in this image, Spike is vigorously scratching those itchy pin feathers. Spike, it is!

  1. Love it!
When I was camping a chipmunk kept coming into our site with a stump of a tail so of course he was Stumpy. It was fun to be able to recognize him because all the others looked the same.

  2. Hi Carol:

Spike is a great name for this hummer. And your story brings back memories for Sue and me. We owned a townhouse several years ago where every evening, always between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m., a green hummer would sit precisely on the same branch of the same tree and just sing his heart out for about half-an-hour. We named him Caruso. Every evening like clockwork. Then one evening the music ceased mid-song: Caruso had passed away. We buried him beneath “his” perch between two rose bushes marking his resting place with a rose flower.
