2024—Not Just Hummers

Although we went to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains of Arizona to photograph some of the many species of hummingbird that live in or migrate through the area, there are lots more bird species in Madera Canyon than just hummingbirds. In fact, Madera Canyon is a renowned birding destination. While we photographed the many Hummingbird species that vied for space at the nectar feeders, the trees just beyond us were filled with lots of other birds, including Mexican Jays, Sulphur-bellied and Brown-crested Flycatchers, Western Wood-Pewees, White-breasted Nuthatches, Painted Restarts, and Acorn Woodpeckers, to name just a few. The Arizona Woodpecker, shown above, was gulping down grubs it found in the bark of the oak in front of us. This Woodpecker used its stiff tail to support it as it dug into the bark.
