In Ecuador this past April I was blown away by the Tanagers. Every day it seemed we were introduced to yet another stunningly colorful species of Tanager. On our first day, we met this gorgeous cinnamon colored Tanager and I was struck by its beauty, never having seen a bird that color before. I was stunned to discover that it was the female White-lined Tanager, not the male. It was a couple of days before I saw the plain black male. The bird gets its common name from a thin white line that is usually only visible on the shoulder of the male’s wing in flight. However, its Latin name, Tachyphonus rufus, is named for the gorgeous rufous female. Go figure!
